Nicholas Alexander Faldo was born in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England, on 18 July 1957. At the age of 14, he became interested in golf after he saw Jack Nicklaus play the 1971 Masters. Three years later, Faldo qualified to play in the 1974 English Amateur at Woodhall Spa.

Nick Faldo started his professional golf career in 1976 when he joined the European Professional Golfers Association and achieved instant success at the European Tour, winning the 1977 and 1978 seasons.
