Oscar Robertson was born Oscar Palmer Robertson on the 24th of November in 1938 in Charlotte, Tennessee. Robertson was brought up in a segregated housing project that was located in Indianapolis. Although many of the boys in his school preferred playing baseball, he opted to join basketball since it was referred to as “a poor kids’ game.” His family, however, couldn’t afford to buy a basketball for him. Therefore he made tennis balls and rags that were bound with rubber bands.
Robertson schooled at Crispus Attucks High School, which was an all-black high school. Raw Crowe coached Robertson at Crispus Attucks, and he had a very great influence on Robertson’s style of play.
