On July 24, 1957, Pamela Yvonne Tillis was born to Mel Tillis and Doris Tillis in Plant City, Florida, United States. Her father is also a country music singer. She has five siblings; Mel Sonny Tillis Jr, wh0 is also a singer and songwriter, Carrie April, Connie, Cindy, And Hannah Tillis Pamela grew up in Nashville and made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry at the age of 8 years old singing ‘Tom Dooley.’
Tillis began taking piano lessons and taught herself to play guitar at the age of 12. She was injured in a car accident at 16 and had to undergo several years of surgery, including facial reconstruction. She later enrolled at the University of Tennessee, where she performed in two different groups; a jug band called High Country Swing Band and folk duo with Ashley Cleveland.
However, Tillis dropped out of college in 1976 to work at her father’s publishing company, where she wrote the song, ‘the other side of the morning’ for Barbara Fairchild. Tillis later moved to California and founded Freelight Band, which played jazz and rock. She returned to Nashville in 1979 and had her songs recorded by Gloria Gyana, Darryl & Don Ellis, Tim Ryan, Molly & Haymakers, and Chaka Khan. Tillis later signed with Warner Bros. Records in the early 1980s after performing in the Bluebird Café in Nashville.
