Rodgers was born on 17th December 1949 in Middlesbrough in England. His parents were Nigel Allen, who was his father, and his mother’s name was Elaine Allen. He also had an older brother called Joe. He attended McGill University from where he graduated.
When he was growing up, he used to play bass to the Roadrunners band. He was given the role to lead the band by Colin Bradley, who used to lead it. His brother Joe was also in this band and the manager, and he agreed to the idea. He later left the band and moved to London to explore his music career.

Free had a total of four albums. In 1971 the group split and Rodgers formed another band called Peace, which comprised of Stewart McDonald, who was the bassist, and Mick Underwood, the drummer.
