Albert Johnson or Prodigy was born in Hempstead, New York, on November 2, 1974, to his parents Budd Johnson Jr. and Fatima Frances (Collins) Johnson. He came from a musical family in which his grandfather was a saxophonist and grand-uncle trombonist. His mother was a member of the vocal group “The Crystals,” and his father was a member of a doo-wop music group, “The Chanters.”
Prodigy’s great-great-great-grandfather, William Jefferson White, was the founder of Georgia’s Morehouse College. He spent most of his childhood days in LeFrak along with his elder brother Greg Johnson. He attended the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan, where he met rapper and musician Havoc, who later went on to become his music partner.

Prodigy was married to Kiki Johnson. The couple has two beautiful children, T’Shaka & Fahtasia. He had a life-long battle with sickle-cell anemia.

Prodigy started his career at the age of 16 when he joined Jive Records and collaborated for the song “Too Young.” In 1995, he made a guest appearance in the song “I Shot Ya (Remix).” The song became highly controversial as rapper Tupac Shakur thought that it is a diss song that referred to the Manhattan shooting.
In 1996, along with musician Havoc, Prodigy released his song “Hell on Earth,” which reached number 6 on SoundScan. In 2000, he released his debut solo album H.N.I.C. Later, he worked with Mobb Deep on several studio albums such as Amerikaz Nightmare, Infamy, Blood Money, and others.
