Inception

Queen Band was formed in 1970 and ended up being one of the most famous bands of their generation. Their music style was not specifically heavy metal; it was a combination of heavy metal, glam rock, and camp theatrics. During their rise to glory, the band had received their fair share of criticism, but they approached their music in a unique manner. They crafted an elaborate blend of layered guitar work by Brian May and combined it with overdubbed vocal harmonies enlivened by the flamboyant performance of their songwriter, Freddie Mercury.

The band was comprised of university and art-school students and led by their producer, Roy Thomas Baker, and the band had been a fan favorite when they released their third album. The band was a perfect match, and success was clearly ahead of them. They continued releasing big-time hits that went on to dominate the international charts.

Evolution

Brian May began his musical career when he formed a band with his friend in the 1960’s. Tim Scafell, his classmate, started with him and called it 1984. However, the band did not last for a very long time. Later on, Brian May was still very passionate about music and started another band. This time, he started a band with his college classmates, Tim Scafell and Roger Taylor.

The band was called, ‘Smile.’ Roger Taylor was on drums and vocals, Tim Scafell was on vocals and bass, and Brian May was on guitar and vocals. The band actually had a few hits such as ‘April Lady.’ Later on, Tim Stafell became friends with Farrokh Bulsara (who later changed his name to Freddie Mercury), and Farrokh became a big fan of Smile.

Farrokh really encouraged Smile, but later, Tim left Smile and joined another band known as ‘Humpy Bongs.’ Due to the loss that Smile had suddenly gone, Farrokh joined the band to fill in the empty spot. Farrokh Bulsara joined the band to do the piano and vocals in 1970. This was the formation of the famous band we all know and love today. Farrokh came up with the name, ‘Queen,’ which the band agreed to. So, they officially changed its name from ‘Smile’ to ‘Queen,’ this was the birth of the band.

At this moment, they also began looking for a bassist. They held numerous auditions to find a suitable bassist, but the task was not as easy as it seemed. They kept changing bass players every now and then until they stumbled upon John Deacon. The band released their first album in 1973, and later on, Farrokh Bulsara changed his name to Freddie Mercury after releasing the song, ‘Mother Mercury, look what they have done to me.’

The band went on ahead to release numerous hits that were very competitive in the international charts. However, the band faced a major blow when they lost their lead singer, Freddie Mercury after he lost his life to an AIDS-related disease. This happened in 1991, while in 1997, John Deacon retired from the band to spend more time with his family. The band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
