José Cano, Cano’s father, signed as an amateur free agent with the New York Yankees in 1980 and played in the Yankees’ and Atlanta Braves’ minor league systems before making his Major League debut in 1989, pitching in six games for the Houston Astros. Canó was signed as an amateur free agent by the Yankees on January 5, 2001, after graduating from high school, and received a signing bonus of almost $100,000. That season, he debuted with the Gulf Coast Yankees of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League and the Staten Island Yankees of the Class-A Short Season New York–Penn League in their minor league system.
In 2002, Canó split his time between Staten Island and the Greensboro Bats of the Class-A South Atlantic League. Canó was a notable prospect when he played for the Tampa Yankees of the Class-A Advanced Florida State League and Trenton Thunder of the Class-AA Eastern League in 2003. Canó made an appearance in the All-Star Futures Game in 2003.
