On September 28, 1941, Sam Zell was born to Ruchla and Berek Zielonka, Jewish immigrants from Poland, where the father of Sam was a successful grain trader. They migrated to the United States with their young daughter Leah via Tokyo. After Arrival to the US, the parents of Sam changed their first and last names, becoming Rochelle and Bernard Zell.
At the age of 12, Sam, together with his parents, moved to Highland Park, which is in Illinois, where he attended and graduated from Highland Park High School. Later in 1963, Sam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan.

Sam Zell married three times and divorced twice, and he has three children. He has a son called Mathew, a daughter called Joann from his first marriage and another daughter who he had adopted, and she goes by the name Kellie. Sam Zell adopted Kellie when he was in his second marriage. Sam lives in Chicago and has homes in Sun Valley and Malibu.

By the time Sam Zell graduated from the University Of Michigan Law School in 1966, the two partners were managing over a number of apartments and owned some units as well. After graduation, Zell worked as a lawyer for a short while before venturing into business, which seemed to go well with him.
