Early Life & Biography

Selna Quintanilla was born on the 16th of April 1971 in Freeport, Texas, the U.S.  to parents Marcella Ofelia Quintanilla and Abraham Quintanilla Jr. By profession, her father was a musician. When it comes to her religious views, she was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness. She has an elder sister Suzette Quintanilla, who was her senior by four years and an elder brother A.B. Quintanilla, III, who was her senior by 8. Her mother discovered her musical talent when she was just six years old.

Her father opened his first Tex-Mex restaurant called “Papa Gayo’s” in Lake Jackson in 1981, where Selena and her siblings used to perform.  The restaurant, however, closed down next year due to a recession at the time. The family went bankrupt and ultimately settled in  Corpus Christi, Texas. Her father became the manager and the group member of the band “Selena y Los Dinos,” which consisted of Selena, her siblings, her father, and other artists that performed on streets, weddings, fairs, and more.

When it comes to her education, she was taken out of her school when she was in the 8th grade. She was finally able to secure a diploma from the American School of Correspondence at 17 years of age. She then got into the Pacific Western University, where she studied with Business Administration as her major.

Personal Life

Selena Quintanilla started dating fellow band member and guitarist, Chris Pérez in 1989. However, she hid her relationship because she felt if her father found out about the relationship, he would try to end it. Years later, her father did find out about the relationship and, as expected, didn’t approve of them and even removed from the band. However, they continued the relationship despite his approval.

On the 2nd of April 1992, they got married without the family’s knowledge. The media outlets reported about the marriage just hours after the marriage took place. The entire family looked for Selena except for her father, who kept to himself for some time. However, her father did eventually accepted Chris and welcomed him back into the band.

Selena’s family appointed Yolanda Saldívar as the manager of Selena’s boutiques in 1994. 8 Months later, Selena herself signed Yolanda to be her agent.  A year later, she found that Yolanda’s behavior with her staff members was quite degrading, but she brushed it aside. In January of 1995, Selena’s father started receiving calls from fans saying they paid for the membership of the Selena Fan Club but received nothing in return.

Upon investigation, it was found that Yolanda did fraudulently collected upwards of $30,000 via forged checks from both the fan club as well as the boutiques. Her father banned her from having any contact with Selena, but Selena didn’t want that. Selena asked her to hand over the bank statements and other financial records, but she delayed it. On 31st March 1995, Selena went to Yolanda’s room at  Days Inn in Corpus Christi, where she demanded the financial papers.

She instead got a gun from her purse and shot Selena when she tried to escape.  Selena did manage to reach the lobby where she collapsed, but before collapsing, she did name Saldivar as her assailant and the room number of the hotel where she was shot to the hotel clerk. The clerk called the emergency services, and she was taken to the Corpus Christi Hospital. After 50 minutes of surgery, she was declared from dead loss and cardiac arrest. On the other hand, Yolanda was caught at the hotel itself by a responding police officer, and she surrendered the same day after being interrogated by the Police and the FBI.
