Early Life & Biography

She was born Shawn Machel Johnson, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Teri and Doug Johnson. When she was little, she started to climb the cabinets and jump off the table, and this prompted her parents to enroll her in a gymnastics class at the age of three. The famous coach Liang Chow opened a gymnastics school in West Des Moines, and Shawn was among his first students at the age of six. Chow became her coach for almost two decades in her career as a competitive gymnast.

She attended Valley High School, and she had a more balanced lifestyle, training for only 25 hours as opposed to 40 hours. Together with her mother, they relocated to Los Angeles, and this forced her to leave public school and get into private tuition, finishing her high school education in 2010.

Johnson got engaged to her current husband, Andrew East, in July 2015, and they got married in April 2016. Andrew is a professional American football player and a former Washington Redskins player. They welcomed their child, Drew Hazel East, on 29 October 2019.
