Mills was born as Stephanie Dorthea Mills to Joseph and Christine Mills and hence raised in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. As a child, Mills sang gospel music at Brooklyn’s Cornerstone Baptist Church, where she began her professional career at nine, appearing in the Broadway musical Maggie Flynn.
