Stockard was born Susan Williams Antonia Stockard on 13th February 1944 in Manhattan, New York. Her father, Lester Napier Stockard, was a shipping businessman until his death in the late 1960s. Her mother, Mary Alice, was an Irish native and a devout Catholic. Channing has only one sister by the name Lesly Stockard who at one time was Palm Beach, Florida mayor. Both sisters were raised in Manhattan before each leaving either for education or other personal reasons.

Channing attended Chapin School in New York before later joining Madeira School, which was located in McLean, Virginia. After Madeira School, she joined Radcliffe College in Massachusetts, where she majored in History, and Literature graduated in 1965. To sharpen her acting skills, she enrolled in HB Studio, where she got her training.

Channing has tried marriage four times, with all her marriages ending in divorce after a short time. She married her first husband, Walter Channing, in 1963 when she was only 19 years of age. Her third marriage was to David Debin in 1976, who is Writer and producer.

Again their marriage didn’t work, and they divorced in 1980. Channing married for the fourth immediately after her divorce to David in 1980 and lasted for eight years and divorced in 1988.
