Dear Ty,
I read the article in the March Western Horseman on horse training. I was amazed that you have learned so much in such a complicated and never ending process ( the more you learn the more you realize how much more there is). It is never ending research!
I would like to give you a short run own about who I am. I was born in 1936 and worked on big ranches in Northern Nevada at a very young age and went to California with Ray Hunt at age 18. I was neighbors to Bill Dorrance for many years, where he helped me with the colts I started. He had a Thoroughbred off the track named Patrick that I started showing in stock horse classes for several years on the West Coast. Ray Hunt and I agreed he was the best broke horse we had ever ridden. Bill showed me how to get the horse responding to light pressure with my body and coordinate moving their feet.
My main point in writing to you is this – you can ride horses with a snaffle or some half breed bits that aren’t heavy and don’t pinch without pulling, just keep the float in your reins, to move off then gather with a small amount of float in left. Bill Dorrance was the first one on the West Coast to teach his horses to flex through body and hands. I immediately felt that was what I had been looking for but it took me about 15 years to get confident and comfortable with it. I did really good showing Patrick. My wife Lilla, for 60 years, won the Woman Stock Horse Class at the Salinas Rodeo on Patrick in 1960. Here is a breakdown of the Dorrance Family: Jim – was an older brother and buckaroo boss for YP in Elko, County NV, and Tom – rode for Marvels and helped with horses and lived in California. They were all raised on a ranch on the Imnah River near Joseph, OR.
Congrats on all you have done.
Sincerely,
Woodie Bell
